Avant-Gardism in the 20th CenturyFollowing on from our successful primer A Young Person’s Guide to the Avant-Garde, LTM now offer more comprehensive overviews of The French Avant-Garde in the 20th Century (LTMCD 2471) and The American Avant-Garde in the 20th Century (LTMCD 2479).
Commencing with pioneers Claude Debussy and Erik Satie, LTMCD 2571 moves forward to absurdist and dreamlike Dada and Surrealist compositions (Duchamp, Picabia, Desnos, Ribemont-Dessaignes), as well as the more conventional work of Jean Cocteau’s celebrated ‘Group des Six’, and onwards to postwar electronics and musique concrète by Schaeffer, Henry and Varèse. Works by a number of modern composers (Messiaen, Boulez, Greif, Catoire, Hersant) are also featured, several of these being world premiere recordings by noted French pianist Nicolas Horvath.
LTMCD 2579 begins with Charles Ives and George Antheil (including the celebrated, Futuristic Ballet Mechanique of 1924), as well as pieces by émigré arrivals in the New World such as Leo Ornstein, Dane Rudhyar and Edgard Varèse, as well homegrown composers including Henry Cowell, Carl Ruggles and Roger Sessions. The second disc offers works by a number of even more modern modernists, notably Morton Feldman, Harry Partch and the immortal John Cage, whose groundbreaking Sonatas and Interludes for prepared piano is presented in its entirety.
Both with a generous playing time of 140 minutes, each 2xCD set contains an illustrated booklet with detailed historical notes.
